MORE than 200 people have already entered this year's Pink Ribbon Run/Walk - but organisers are hoping to see at least 1,000 people taking part in the event next month.

And this year they are hoping to raise more than £40,000 which will mean in the last three years £100,000 has been donated to Cancer Research UK.

The event will be taking place on Therfield Heath on Sunday, June 22.

Last year more than 700 people took part in the event over a three-mile course around the heath.

Maurice Hill, a member of the organising committee, said he was hoping that 1,000 people would be taking part this year.

To help, Maurice, who is chairman of the Royston Runners, is running beginner training sessions on the heath on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm.

Another member of Royston Runners, Mandy Jinkerson, who is also on the organising committee, is unable to run this year because of recent knee surgery - but will be walking around the course.

She said. "This is not a race, but a run or walk for everyone."

She added that to take part this year will be a challenge, but she is determined to walk in the event.

This year, too, Johnson Matthey will be supporting the event, which means the costs of organising the day will be covered.

Michaela Huffer, of the organising committee, said: "It is invaluable to us and means that every penny raised will be donated to Cancer Research UK as the costs of organising has been completely met through this sponsorship."

Other sponsors involved include the Royston-based chartered accountants WKH, the Heath Sports Centre, Curwens solicitors, Internet Geeks, the Stationery Cupboard, Wooden House Design & Media, Tesco and Brooks Running.

Each person taking part will receive an exclusive cotton pink shopping bag and a Pink Ribbon T-shirt and medal.

The entry for the event is adult £12 (over-18) and child £6 (under-18). The even will begin at 11am, but there will be an aerobic warm-up session at 10.40am.
