A £50,000 drainage scheme is planned for Melbourn to combat further flooding to homes.

New piping with increased capacity will be put in between Water Lane and Station Road.

Mike Oakman, divisional maintenance manager at Cambs Highways, said: "It has taken a great deal of organising because of the amount of services in the High Street.

"But I'm confident it will releave the problem to some extent."

Drains in Moat Lane, Orchard Road and The Moor have already been cleaned out and tree rootes have been removed.

Residents have claimed that Cambridgeshire County Council has done nothing to resolve the problem.

At a meeting of Melbourn Parish Council on Monday, resident Claire McComb, of the High Street, said: "What happens if we don't pay our Council Tax, because I'm getting to the point where I'm fed up with it. The council are not using our money wisely."

Louise Carter, of Little Lane, said: "The drainage in Melbourn is not up to dealing with all the rain. Something needs to be done.

"No more houses should be built until the drainage can cope with what's already there."

The parish council has raised concern about the flooding problem in the past.

The scheme should be completed by April next year.
