Royston Volunteer Centre manager Denise Graham’s regular look at the voluntary sector in North East Herts

This week brings a chance to be part of one of Royston’s unique experiences, which is protected both as both a scheduled ancient monument and Grade I listed building.

Beneath the busy street next to Katherine’s Yard is Royston Cave, a man-made cavern in the shape of a beehive, with a small aperture at the top for ventilation.

It’s believed to date from the 14th century and its most remarkable feature is an extensive range of carvings which are medieval in appearance.

Some studies have drawn comparisons from the wall carvings and other sources to indicate that it may have been used by the ancent Knights Templar.

The cave is now opening for the 2016 season on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and volunteers are needed from 2.15pm to 4.30pm to provide a meet and greet service at the cave entrance.

As you will be on be on duty in the open air for two hours and may, on occasion, have to go down into the cave you will need to be physically fit. A good sense of humour and the ability to chat with people of all ages is a must.

The role involves selling tickets, giving information about the timings of tours, managing the queuing process and liaising with the tour guide.

So if you have an interest in Royston’s past and a willingness to learn about the cave, this is an excellent way to meet new people and be part of the local community.
