A COUPLE cut the cake all over again on Easter Sunday as they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Doreen and Geoffrey Lonsdale, of Kings James Way in Royston, married on April 5, 1952. And 60 years on they relived the day by attending Royston Methodist Church and giving out cake to members of the congregation.

The couple, who met aged 14 at a methodist church in Blackpool where they later married at 21, received a congratulatory card from the Queen on their special day last Thursday.

Asked the secret to their longevity, Doreen and Geoffrey, both 81, said: “Love and respect for each other is essential.

“Life can be very challenging, but we have taken the rough with the smooth and we have lived and worked together in harmony.”

The message from the Queen was organised by daughter Wendy who also lives in the town, prompting Doreen and Geoffrey to move to Crow country in 2009 to be closer to her.

The couple added: “In our married life we have lived in Lancashire, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex and have life-long friends from living in all of these counties, but we are very happy to have settled in Hertfordshire, where we see our daughter and son-in-law regularly and we enjoy Royston town very much.”
