HE was a very good dancer," said Edith Grimshaw as she looked lovingly at her husband Jim, remembering the day they met. The couple, who now live in Kennedy Court, Royston, fell in love as teenagers at a dance and today (Thursday) celebrate 60 years of marriage. Holding hands with Edith, Jim said: "We used to have Sunday school dances and that's how we met. I started walking out with Edith, as they used to say, when I was 17 and she was 15. "I'm coming up to 85 years old now, so we've known each other for a long, long while." Jim said the secret to their long marriage was talking things through. "Work at it, talk to one another and discuss things with each other. You don't get people making 60 years that often these days. People are lucky if they can make it 20 years," he said. "We've always discussed things. We've always sat down and discussed what we want, we've never used a credit card either, if we want something we've saved for it. "Even today at breakfast we were discussing what we wanted to have for lunch. "We've had a really good life together." He said they have been through some rough patches, but have come out of the other side stronger. "We've had the odd up and down, but anyone who says they've been through a 60-year marriage without the occasional scrap is telling a few porkies - we've been extremely lucky though." The couple were engaged when the Second World War broke out and Jim was shipped out to the Far East, where he served as a commando. Four years later, he returned and the pair were married almost immediately. "After being away at war we wanted to get it done as soon as possible," said Jim. "I came home from abroad on the Tuesday and we were married a week on Saturday afterwards." The couple have lived in Cornwall, London, Leicester, Maidstone, Brighton and Weybridge, but they say Royston has been their best home. "I must admit, it's the best place we've ever lived and we've lived all over with my job," said Jim, who spent his working life with the Dunlop company. The couple will be celebrating their anniversary by having a party with residents at Kennedy Court.
