A 500-year-old barn in Chrishall is set to be saved from collapse as funding has now been granted after a six-year fight from the community.

The Grade II-listed thatched barn in the grounds of The Red Cow in High Street is one of the oldest buildings in the village – thought to date from 1490 – and is currently listed on the ‘Buildings at Risk’ register.

The pub’s owners, villagers and visitors have long been concerned about rescuing the building before its complete dilapidation, but have been hampered by planning regulations and high costs. However, it can now be renovated into B&B accomodation.

The Red Cow’s landlord Toby Didier’Serre said: “We have been delighted to receive a grant from the Rural Development fund for Europe, and Christie Finance have supported us to secure matched-funding from HSBC.

“The responsibility for saving this wonderful building has weighed heavy. Such a historic barn deserved to be rescued and converted into a useful asset for the village.”
