A CYCLE group is calling for a bridge or underpass to be built to provide a safe crossing for cyclists on the A505 dual carriageway.

The Royston branch of the A10 Corridor Cycle Campaign is taking part in a cycle ride from Royston to Melbourn on Sunday, May 19, to highlight the problems faced by cyclists using the roads around the town.

The campaign is also lobbying for better provision for cyclists on the A10 to Cambridge, and another party will be cycling from Cambridge to Melbourn, so the two groups meet in the village.

Matthew Scales of the campaign’s Royston group said: “Decent cycle routes exist in Royston up to where the statues are in Melbourn Road.

“Beyond that we need better provision up to the A505, and a safe way to cross the road. Visibility at the A10/A505 roundabout is poor, and cars travel very fast.

“Ideally we would like to see a safe crossing put in place between the A10 roundabout and the Tesco roundabout on the A505.

This could be a bridge, or an underpass like the one in Burns Road.

“At the moment crossing is not safe by any stretch of the imagination.”

The group also wants to see the existing pathways widened, and resurfacing work carried out to fix potholes.

Mr Scales wants as many cyclists as possible to join the Royston leg of the ride, which starts at 10.30am at Royston railway station.

He said: “We hope to increase the awareness for residents in the town and the local government.

“We would also like everyone to stay safe on the ride and encourage people to wear bright clothing and to ride with vigilance. Riders participate at their own risk.”

The Cambridge party will be setting off at 10am from the Trumpington Park and Ride site, and the plan is for both groups to meet at 11.30am at Phillimore Garden Centre, Melbourn.
