A cyclist tragically died on the edge of Royston yesterday morning after being found lying in the road.

Police said the man, described as aged in his 50s, appeared to have come off his bike on the road between the village of Therfield and the A505, near the McDonald’s and Therfield Heath car park.

Officers said they were called at abóut 11.45am, and that the man seemed to have been heading southbound along the road. Paramedics were called to the scene, but the cyclist was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Investigating officer Sgt James Wood of the Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the cyclist’s family at this devastating time and we are currently doing all that we can to piece together the circumstances that caused him to come off his bike.

“I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around the time and saw anything, or who saw a cyclist travelling along the road, to please get in contact as soon as possible. Any information you provide could prove to be vital in helping us to get to the bottom of what happened here.”
