Campaigners fighting for better cycling facilities in Royston are urging residents to join them at a meeting next week.

The Royston branch of the A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign will be holding the meeting at the Coombes Community Centre on Tuesday, January 14.

Formed by cyclists in Crow country last year, the campaign has been pressing for improvements to cycling conditions along the A10 between Royston and Cambridge. Funding for improved new cycle paths between Foxton and Shepreth has already been secured, with work carried out before Christmas, and the Royston section of the group is actively campaigning for a safe crossing for cyclists where the A10 meets the A505.

Matt Scales is a member of the group. He said: “We want to encourage as many local residents as possible to come along and support the campaign. or maybe to come along and find out more about what improvements have already happened and what are still in the pipeline.

“At the minute there is a fantastic new section of path being introduced between Foxton and Shepreth and there are immanent works to expose the overgrown path between Foxton and Harston which is desperately overdue.”

A meeting took place in December involving officers from Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire County Councils, as well as county councillors Susan van de Ven (Melbourn) and Fiona Hill (Royston), to look at solutions to help cyclists cross the A505.

Mr Scales added: “The ongoing issue regarding a crossing for the A505 is still very much at the forefront of the campaign and something which has benefited from some added pressure after the meeting held last month.

“What we really need to do is to carry this momentum forward into 2014 and with the added support of the local residents, we can look to build on the achievements and progression of 2013.”

The meeting takes place at Coombes Community Centre on Tuesday, 14 January, 7pm for 7.30pm start.
