AFTER much debate proposals for a drink ban in Royston town centre and the nearby Priory Memorial Gardens were given the go-ahead.

The move came after complaints about anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the area.

North Hertfordshire District Council was studying the results of a 28-day consultation exercise in which it called on the public for views on the scheme.

During the year The Crow campaigned for the ban after residents reported property being damaged and anti-social behaviour in the Priory Memorial Gardens.

The problems of anti-social behaviour and under-age drinking saw the introduction of Ministry of Defence police officers based at Bassingbourn Barracks to help in a bid to curb the problem.

Closed-circuit television was also erected in the Priory Memorial Gardens.
