Crossing wires at suggestion of Foxton gate closure

The closure of a pedestrian crossing at Foxton Level Crossing is being considered by Network Rail - months after new gates were installed.
A Network Rail department has recommended the closure of the Barrington Road/A10 pedestrian crossing as part of plans by the company to improve safety by reducing the likelihood of people coming into contact with trains at crossings.
But the plans have caused confusion – not least for Foxton county councillor Susan van de Ven, who said: “I contacted Network Rail and said: ‘Do you realise that you’ve just spent lots of money on two new sets of self-locking gates?’
“It would appear there has been a lack of communication within the organisation. It would make the crossing so much more dangerous – there’s no other way to cross safely.”
In Meldreth, Network Rail proposes to close the crossing south of the vehicle bridge over the railway that leads from the Chiswick End area to St John’s Farm, Fieldgate and Melbourn.
A consultation on the future of a number of crossings will be held at Browns Field Youth and Community Centre in Cambridge next Friday, June 10.
