Cambridgeshire residents have recycled more rubbish than was sent to landfill sites.
A record 51 per cent of waste was recycled from April-June, while the national average figure was 23 per cent.
County councillor John Reynolds, Cabinet member for environment, said residents had made "great efforts" to improve on recycling during recent months.
He said the county council was "leading the way" in the country for recycling.
Last year the council had to spend £7.3 million on dumping waste at landfill sites - and £771,000 of that money went to the Government.
