COUNCILLORS in Buntingford have rejected a move to give town council property to East Herts District Council.
Cllr Pat Whittaker proposed that the town council looked at the possibility of East Herts District Council taking back town council property and land such as the Norfolk Road Playing Fields.
But the idea was rejected by the amenities committee.
Town clerk Jill Jones said: "The district council could potentially get rid of all the town's facilities if it owned them.
"Therefore, it's a risk that if we hand over the facilities and land, it could be sold off and lost."
After the meeting, Cllr Whittaker said: "If the district council wanted to use the land I think it would take it over whether or not it was town council-owned land.
"I made the proposal because I'm just thinking of a way of having the facilities without the cost."
He said there was about £40,000 in the town council budget to meet the costs of play areas.
"If it was taken over by the district council it would be up to them to maintain it.
