A YOUTH council could be set up in Royston.

Town councillors are to draw up a report over the next month to look at the creation of such a body.

The idea was given the support of Royston Town Council on Monday evening after considering a report from North Herts District Council community officer Alan Fleck.

Mr Fleck told councillors that to set up a youth council there had to be "commitment and resources".

He envisaged a "joint operation" being run by the town council and district council and young people.

"We can make this work together," said Mr Fleck.

He assured councillors that the district council would not "walk away" from the project. "We would be there when we are needed."

Initially, he said, there needed to be talks involving The House - the youth project in Royston - and The Meridian Youth Centre.

"We need to see whether it is a game worth playing," he said.

The £2,000-a-year cost of running the youth council would need to be shared between the town council and district council, he said.

Cllr Rod Kennedy said that in the past youngsters in Royston had raised issues and suggestions about the needs of youth.

"They have given is ideas but these have not been deliverable through a lack of money or the will," he said.

"It needs us to have the will to deliver and this may prove to be the difficulty," said Cllr Kennedy.

Cllr Lindsay Davidson said: "It's an excellent idea and it is something the town council has to get behind.
