COUNCIL Tax in East Herts will increase by 4.8 per cent. The increase was approved at a meeting of the council on Wednesday. It means an average Band D property in Buntingford will pay £1,356 for services provided in 2006-07 - an increase of £61-a-year compared with 2005-06. East Herts Council is set to collect £7.682 miilion from council tax payers in 2006-07. But the increase is said to enable the district council to improve the street scene, invest money in grass-cutting and meal-on-wheels, improve closed-circuit television systems to reduce the fear of crime and give people more opportunities to recycle. Cllr Tony Jackson, leader of the council, said: "The desire to continually improve and learn is the bedrock so necessary for this authority to continue delivering improved services and offer value for money. "We have put together a workmanlike budget designed to provide a base for the next step in our aspirations to improve the quality of people's lives in East Herts.
