A BEACON Authority award has been given to South Cambridgeshire District Council for its waste and recycling operations.
The award recognises that the district council is one of the best in the country.
In a statement the district council said the achievement showed it was at the "cutting edge" of policy development on waste and recycling.
"At the end of the day, it's the hard work of residents that means we have exceeded targets and done so well," said the statement.
South Cambridgeshire is the second best district in the UK for composting and the third overall for recycling.
In recent years the district council has put into place a number of waste initiatives in a bid to cut the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites.
