A COUNCIL leader and his deputy will remain in their jobs after surviving a vote of no confidence.

The motion was brought against Cllr Ray Manning, leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, and deputy leader, Cllr Simon Edwards, following the decision of council house tenants to reject a plan to transfer council housing stock to a private housing association.

But at an extraordinary general meeting of the district council, held yesterday, 27 members voted against the motion, with 22 voting in favour.

Following the housing transfer ballot, 15 councillors, including Cllr Nigel Cathcart (Bassingbourn) and Cllr Deborah Roberts (Fowlmere) had signed the motion calling for the removal of Cllr Manning and Cllr Edwards.

Campaigners from the South Cambs Against Transfer pressure group claimed that the district council had spent �1million of tax payers money on "utterly biased, pro-transfer, propaganda.
