Council could introduce kerbside recycling
NORTH Herts District Council (NHDC) has unanimously agreed to look into the possibility of introducing kerbside plastic recycling, after a motion was brought last week.
Currently NHDC is just one of two councils in the county that does not offer kerbside collections of plastic materials.
It means that residents have to drive or walk to recycling banks if they wish to recycle such items.
NHDC’s full council agreed that the motion should be passed after the issue was brought up at last Thursday’s meeting by some of the district’s councillors.
“After potholes, this is the biggest issue that residents have at the moment,” said Cllr Judi Billing, one of the councillors who brought the motion to the council’s attention.

“It seems ridiculous that people are driving to recycling banks and creating carbon emissions. It seems pretty counter productive to me and to them. It’s time that we are brought up to date with the rest of the county. It’s what people want and need.”
NHDC’s Cabinet will consider a report on the motion, possibly as early as at its next meeting.

“At its meeting on April 7, councillors agreed to request a report examining the feasibility of introducing kerbside collection for recyclable plastics,” said John Robinson, NHDC’s strategic director of customer services.
“This report will consider the environmental and financial implications of this together with an assessment of other options.”
