Cookbook gives food for thought

RESIDENTS in Ashwell have helped create a cookbook with a difference to help raise money for their community hall.

Flavours of Ashwell, which is being launched on Sunday to coincide with the re-opening of Ashwell Village Hall, is full of local recipes and tips from abroad.

Put together by Pam Wallace, Christine Schwick, Jill Powell and Bridget Long, the cookbook contains 116 unique recipes.

Mrs Powell said: "This is a unique cook-book that is packed full of fabulous recipes. There's something for everyone in it.

"We asked locals to con-tribute their favourite recipes and we really couldn't have done it without them."

Recipes include traditional soups, casseroles and puddings, as well as exotic dishes from Africa, New Zealand and Bulgaria.

There is even a recipe from Cyprus for digestive dog biscuits.

The money raised from the cookbooks will con-tribute towards the refurbishment of the village hall, which is the largest claybat building in the south of England.

Mrs Powell said: "We all wanted to help with the refurbishment of the village hall and thought that this would be a good way of raising funds.

"The village hall is an important part of the community and is a facility that is used by so many people."

The hall has been redeveloped with a number of new amenities including new facilities for disabled people and a modernised larger hall.

The launch of Flavours of Ashwell will take place when MP Oliver Heald will formally re-open the hall.

- A food fair will also be running at the village hall from 11am-4pm.
