Buntingford Town Council has received an application to build a telephone mast in the centre of the town.

The proposal, by telephone company T-Mobile, is for a site in Station Road near the Co-op.

The original plan was for an eight-metre mast, but a revised application amends the height to 10.4 metres.

Newly elected Councillor Debbie Le May said: "A mast nearly 35ft high will be an eyesore in Buntingford's beautiful conservation area and would be visible from all over the town.

"These mobile phone masts have not been proved safe. The site is very close to hundreds of houses and little further from two first schools."

The mast would also have three antennae as well as an associated equipment cabinet.

Town clerk Jill Jones said: "We have sent letters to people living near the proposed site.

"Lots of people are worried about the proposal and have come in asking to see the plans."

The application for the telephone mast cannot be refused, but the council can suggest an alternative site.

The application will be considered at the town council's planning meeting tonight (Thursday) and a final decision will be made by East Herts District Council by June 25.
