PLANS for a community building in Melbourn are being hit with problems after South Cambridgeshire District Council suggested that the proposed site could be used for affordable housing instead. The idea for a community building was first mooted last year, and it was hoped it would be used for the village's library, Melbourn Parish Council offices and would offer storage space for equipment for the toy library. The new building is proposed to be built on a section of the village car park, opposite the police station. But at Monday evening's parish council meeting, it was announced that the district council has made suggestions that the site could be used for the development of affordable homes. Parish council vice-chairman Cllr David Wherrell said: "This is a nonsense. "When we first talked to the officers at the district council, their concern was the loss of car park spaces. "But now the idea of affordable housing has come up, and if it does proceed with it, the parish council will walk away." Parish council chairman Cllr Bob Trimble said: "There's no way we can go into this if the district council is going to take up the space with housing." Parish council members will be meeting with officers from the district council later this month to discuss the issue.
