The meeting, held at the town hall on Thursday evening, saw Community Service Awards handed out by Royston’s mayor, Cllr Bob Smith.

Recipients of Community Trust Fund grants were also presented with their cash and certificates.

Among those recognised with community service awards were Chris Murphy, currently chairman of the Royston branch of the Royal British Legion. Mr Murphy has fulfilled a number of different roles at the legion over the years, and plays a big part in organising the town’s annual Remembrance Day parade.

Royston’s town crier, Graham Pfaff, was also given an award.

Grants went to organisations including the Ignite Youth Group, which works with youngsters in Royston and organises events such as the annual Light Party, an alternative to Halloween. They received £300.

Royston’s food bank, which will officially open later this month, was given a grant for £350.
