THE work of people in the community was recognised on Thursday evening. Royston's mayor Cllr Bill Prime presented six community service awards at the annual town meeting in Royston Town Hall. Cllr Prime also gave out cheques from the Royston Community Chest to nine groups. The community chest was set up to aid organisations in Royston to help meet the costs of projects. This year a total of £1,975 was distributed. Those receiving community awards include Phil Smith in recognition of his service as a trustee to the Royston and District Museum and his "dedicated commitment" as a volunteer. Chris Murphy, chairman of the Royston branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, received an award for his tireless work on the documentary, Royston: a Town at War. There was an award, too, to Peter Mottram in recognition of his services to the community during his employment at Johnson Matthey in Royston. Cllr Prime presented community awards also to the Roysia team of district nurses based at the Royston and District Hospital; the staff at Richard Cox House, Royston, for their "dedicated" care of residents and to the Royston team of John O'Conners, the company which looks after grounds maintenance, which includes the Priory Memorial Gardens. Community chest awards were presented to the 1st Royston Scout group; the Smiles Playgroup; the Open House Project; the Stephanie Prior School of Dance; the 2484 (Bassingbourn) Squadron Air Cadets; St John's Parenting team; the Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club, the Rotary Club of Royston and the Royston Greenfingers Club. The awards will be used for such diverse projects as the Royston Greenfingers Club providing bird boxes to the Scouts being able to purchase a new tent.
