Singing in the shadow of the giant tree at St John’s Church, the concert – titled O, Holy Night – saw society members led by new conductor Andrew O’Brien delivering a varied programme including music from the 15th century, as well as contemporary carols and familiar favourites.

They were accompanied by Heath Mount School trebles William Hale and Thomas Scrope and former pupil and BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2013 Laura Barraclough – – the Heath Mount choir has achieved national success under Andrew’s direction – along with organist Michael Smith and London brass ensemble J5o.

One choir member who was not able to join the singers said: “It was almost better to be in the audience than performing, so good was the impression the choir and guest performers gave. The choice of music seemed well rounded and the children and brass group gave the occasion that final polish.”

Next up is a performance of Stainer’s passion meditation The Crucifixion at the end of February.

There will be an open audition from 8pm on Tuesday, January 12, at the church so that aspiring singers can come along and see how they fit in. They will not be asked to sing on their own.
