Community groups, businesses and households have been busy brewing up cash in Royston and surrounding villages for this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
On Friday, KPM Software Systems Ltd in Royston held their event – and almost everyone in the office put their aprons on and got baking, producing a very impressive selection of very yummy cakes and biscuits.
Director Lisbeth Corner told the Crow: “We have all thoroughly enjoyed putting on this event.
“On the day, we were happy to welcome visitors, including everyone from the downstairs office. We all made the most of the goodies on offer – no-one ate lunch that day! – and by the end we had raised £196 for a brilliant cause.
“Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed cakes or cash or both. We shall definitely do it again next year.”
Also on Friday, staff and pupils at Greneway School held their own coffee morning at break.
House captains organised the sale of some of the cupcakes at breaktime to raise funds, and staff were joined by governors for coffee and a slice of cake.
In the afternoon pupils welcomed friends and family to enjoy a cupcake and a drink after school.
Richard Cox House in Royston held their coffee morning with cakes made by chef Mario Tese and agency staff, and everyone enjoyed singing and dancing.
In the spirit of the occasion, manager Marion Truszkowska had a tattoo done to raise awareness free of charge by Royston’s Armadillo Ink.
They raised more than £150 in total.
Tesco Extra Royston held a Macmillan cake sale at the front of the store on Friday. They would like to thank all of our staff for baking and donating a selection of cakes including lemon drizzle, chocolate sponges and cupcakes. They even had some of their staff’s mums baking cakes and would like to say thanks to all customers who supported the sale – £557 was raised in total.
At Sue Shaw’s house in Royston they raised £211 by enjoying tea and cakes, while at Buckland Barn Lyn May and the team raised £240 at their coffee morning – which featured a raffle, coffee and cakes.
Barley’s Olive Drake held her tea party event at her home on Sunday, organised with the help of family.
She told the Crow: “This was our ninth annual tea party in aid of Macmillan, a charity close to our hearts as they have supported family members and friends.
“We had a raffle, auction, stalls, tombola, and live music from the brass quintet LJK Brass.
“The auction always raises a lot of money and laughs, and this year we had generous donations of items from Pinksters Gin, Royston Tesco, Barley Post Office and Stores, Ridgeons, Hotel Chocolate and more.
“The weather forecast was not good and so we moved the event from the garden to the driveway so that we didn’t all sink in the grass and friends lent us their gazebos, although it stayed fine and shelter wasn’t needed!
“Our first tea party in 2009 raised £150 and this has grown annually, this year we made a total of £2,100 with donations still coming in! We have now raised over an amazing £11,000 for this worthwhile charity and are already looking forward to the event next year.”
