Campaigners fighting to keep a church clock chiming believe the success of a coffee morning held to raise funds shows the strength of feeling in the village about the issue.

The Save the Church Chimes of Ashwell group held the coffee morning on Saturday at the Ashwell United Reformed Church Hall, and raised £920 which will be put towards legal fees.

The group wants to ensure that the clock at the St Mary’s Church in the village is allowed to continue chiming after residents living nearby complained about noise disturbance.

Chris Pack, from the group, said: “It was fantastic and felt like the whole village came along. It shows the strength of support we have in Ashwell.”

The group will now consider whether to call for a parish poll on the future of the chimes.
