There have been plenty of coffee and cake fundraisers over the last week as groups from Royston, North Herts and South Cambs took part in the world’s biggest coffee morning to raise money for cancer support charity Macmillan.
The coffee afternoon was combined with a Bake Off style competition at Greneway Middle School where budding Paul Hollywoods and Mary Berrys made six identical cupcakes to be judged.
Afterwards pupils, family and friends were all welcomed to enjoy a cup of coffee and try out the creations.
Staff at Tesco Extra Royston teamed up with staff from Hotel Chocolat for their coffee morning.
The branch’s community champion Mandy Jinkerson said: “We would like to thank everyone who supported us and helped to raise such a fantastic amount of money, £1,145!
Royston Leisure Centre raised more than £700 at their event.
“We had a lemon drizzle, cupcakes, brownies, coffee and walnut, red velvet, chocolate cheesecakes, and even a gym cake,” said fitness manager Gemma Day.
“A big thank you to all the members, staff and public who got involved.”
Melbourn Community Hub manager Siegmar Parton was extremely impressed with the turnout at their coffee morning which raised £320.
“This has been a wonderful morning, and I am happy to see the hub serving its purpose as a community centre for the area,” he said.
“I would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers for all their support to enable this important event to take place. We are also grateful to all the providers of 15 raffle prizes.”
Alison Hopwood owner of Third Generation Hair Studio in Melbourn organised the fundraiser helped by her team.
They served traditional English tea from a teapot in china cups and saucers along with cakes.
“It was a team effort, I couldn’t have done it without Emma Lewis and Olivia Willis,” said Alison.
“Clients are so supportive and I really look forward to this fundraiser, it means so much to so many.”
Helen Pett helped organise the coffee morning at Melbourn Baptist Church where they raised £552.26.
“It was a great morning – well attended, and everyone said how much they enjoyed it!” she said.
Craft Corner at Phillimore Garden Centre in Melbourn had a 1940s-themed coffee morning, with owner and organiser Mandy Hague, her mum Margo and her sister Karen all dressing up for the occasion.
“I’ve been buying china cups, saucers, milk jugs, teaspoons for the last month from charity shops and car boot sales so we could have a themed tea and cake day,” Mandy said.
“All of our lovely customers joined in the fun and have a posh tea or coffee and cake, and we raised £350.”
Jean Fosbeary and Glenda Spry organised the coffee morning at Foxton Village Hall with the help of friends. They had a raffle, sold refreshments and homemade slices of cake, and raised £810.
The ladies of the village turned out in the sunshine for the coffee morning at The Crown at Litlington.
They donated homemade cakes and raffle prizes, and raised £300.
Manager Lorraine Atkins said: “With special thanks to Linda for the loan of the crockery from the village hall, Annette for arranging the raffle, and Barbara who kept us in a constant supply of clean cups.”
