FORMER Royston mayor Cllr Bill Prime presented a cheque for more than £3,000 to the Frank Letts Blind Fellowship on Tuesday.

The cheque was part of the money raised for charity during Cllr Prime's mayoral year.

The group's committee and members attended the event at the Heath Sports Centre in Royston.

Club secretary Bridget Matthews said: "Frank was a lovely man who did a lot for the club and all of its members. This gave us all the chance to remember him and all that he did."

The Frank Letts Blind Fellowship has more than 40 blind and partially-blind members from all over the district, and has been running for more than 12 years.

Cllr Prime raised the cash through a number of fund-raising activities which included a charity golf day and a quiz.

Bridget said: "We are exceedingly lucky to be presented with such a sum of money. Cllr Prime has made an enormous gesture that will ensure the ongoing stability of the club.

"It will help pay for future outings as well as funding special transport for our members.

"It's important for people with sight problems to go to familiar places in which they are used to the surroundings. It is equally important that we keep the club going, and thanks to this cheque we can," she added.

- Cllr Prime raised cash during his mayoral year, too, for the Royston and South Cambridgeshire branch of Home-Start.
