ABOUT 250 people from the Lordsbridge group of parishes gathered in Haslingfield church for the licensing of the Reverend Micheal Mathews as their priest in charge and team vicar designate.
In his address of welcome the Bishop of Ely, the Right Reverend Dr Anthony Russell, asked the congregation not to forget the achievements of previous vicar the Reverend Peter Owen Jones, whose work is now held in high esteem in East Sussex.
It was Mr Jones who persuaded the Diocesan Board of Finance to finance the Woodland burial site at Barton.
This was followed by others, and the trust is now a nationally recognized institution.
Mr Mathews, pictured with the bishop, was welcomed by a delegation of church wardens from the parishes of Haslingfield, Harlton, Great and Little Eversden.
Also present were the Rural Dean Cheryl Collins, John Crang the deputy lay chairman, and councillors on behalf of the community.
