A CHARITY has raised almost £1,000 for elderly and infirm people in the area. The Wheels for Martin's Friends, based in Guilden Morden, raised the money through a draw. It will use half the money to provide wheelchairs, electric scooters, and other mobility equipment for people in need in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. The other half of the money was donated to the Mordens and Litlington Mobile Warden Scheme. When the charity's Peter Furmston presented a cheque for £482 to the warden scheme's committee chairman Jane Davis, she said: "The money will be used to help elderly and infirm people continue to live in their own homes with a degree of independence. "The wardens provide a variety of important services, including collecting prescriptions and pensions, arranging doctors' appointments and transport when necessary, and helping to fill in forms. "They provide an important back up for families by making sure that the elderly are not left on their own for days on end with no contact with the outside world. "There are 22 people being supported in this way. Wheels for Martin was set up in 1989 to provide a wheelchair for a resident of Guilden Morden through fund-raising events in the village. Having fulfilled that need, the charity has continued to provide equipment. The charity has raised nearly £250,000 through donations and annual events, such as the sponsored golf day at the John O'Gaunt Golf Club in Sandy. n If anyone would like to find out more about the charity or knows someone in need of support, call Peter Furmston on 01763 852125. If anyone can help the warden scheme call Jane Davis on 01763 852208.
