There’s no better way to celebrate a great book than to dress up as its characters, and the efforts made by children and adults across the town are testament to that.

At Roysia Middle School, leader of English James Streeter said there was an incredible response from practically every student within the school who made amazing efforts to dress up as their favourite book character.

He said: “I would just like to say how proud I am, not only of their costumes, but also their effort and thoughtfulness in choosing them.

“Staff here all dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland, which caused great delight, particularly our male version of Alice, who amazed everyone with her beauty.”

There were also great efforts from other schools across Royston such as St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Roman Way First School, where children brought in books to share with children in another class.

At Meridian School, pupils had fun seeing their teachers dress up to mark the global celebration of books and reading.

Headteacher Dr Michael Firth said: “The students loved seeing the staff joining in with World Book Day and it certainly encouraged some lively debate about everyone’s favourites.”
