PLANS to expand a cement works in Barrington have been suspended. Cemex UK Operations, which runs Barrington Quarry, has suspended its application to expand the plant, which would have included a new 132 metre-high pre-heater water tower. A company spokesman said: "Following the completion of a feasibility study, the company has suspended an application for planning permission for a new cement plant in Barrington. "The company was to have submitted its planning application to Cambridgeshire County Council in February, but has decided to suspend the plan, due to uncertainty over the future CO2 strategy in the UK." This is due to the Government's plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the UK. Cemex now plans to install a new mill on the coast, to help meet demands from the South East. Rupert Dick, of CamAir, a campaign group set up to fight the plans, said: "It's obviously great news for south Cambridgeshire, but all that's really happened is that they've exported the problem somewhere else. "So it's fantastic for us but not so great for the world." Barrington Parish Council chairman Cllr Tony Fletcher said: "I think we've won the battle - but not the war. "It doesn't say the plans have been permanently stopped, it says suspended. "It's good on a short-term basis, but who knows what the long-term will bring? We still need to know Cemex's plans for the plant. "It's easy to be euphoric, but if we sit down and think about it, there's still a lot of questions to be answered," he added.
