CAMPAIGNERS hoping to slow down drivers outside Royston schools may just get their way.

Herts County Council offered the olive branch when their scrutiny committee unanimously agreed to explore the possibility by holding a special two-day meeting later in the year.

There, they will hear evidence from interested parties and experts and decide whether to restrict certain roads to just 20mph.

One man who has consistently championed a stricter speed limit outside our towns schools is Royston town councillor Robert Inwood.

He told the Crow: “It is something I have been campaigning to bring in for a while now, so I certainly hope it is something that can be implemented.

“Any roads near schools must be a priority and need 20mph zones in place. The safety of all school children is greater than the need to drive fast.

“It is positive news that county council are willing to look into implementing new speed restriction.”

Kneesworth Street resident and Royston Labour Party spokesman Les Baker also backed the move.

He said: “People have been campaigning for months and reducing the speed limit around schools in Royston is absolutely essential. It’s not just one school which needs it, it’s all of them because they all have their own problems.

“I’ve spoken to many residents and many head teachers from various schools and everyone is for the 20mph speed limit outside schools.”

North Herts district councillor Peter Burt, portfolio holder for environment, is urging residents to get in touch to show their support to the scheme.

He said: “If it is appropriate in some places then it is a good idea. Obviously bringing in a 20mph speed limit outside schools would be appropriate and if the public agree then they should really get in touch.

“At the moment it isn’t something I have heard about from residents but if it is going to be discussed with a view to bringing it in then now is the time for residents to argue for it.

“On some roads people may not feel a 20mph speed limit is appropriate and so it can be controversial but of course at the moment it is just the concept being discussed and not the detail.”
