A driver who overtook traffic on the wrong side of the road to go through a level crossing as the barriers were lowered has been banned from driving.

Daniella Nelson, 25, of Shepherds Close, Cambridge, pleaded guilty to careless driving without due care and attention.

CCTV footage from the incident, which took place in September 2013, shows her green Volkswagen Beetle overtaking stationary traffic and crossing the tracks at Foxton just before the barrier comes down.

At a hearing at Cambridge Magistrates Court on Friday, Nelson was given a one-month driving ban, ordered to pay a fine of £280, £30 in costs and a victim surcharge of £28.

Sgt Joe McClenaghan, from the British Transport Police in Cambridge, said: “This sentence should highlight to anyone thinking of taking similar action that it is not worth it.

“Level crossings are designed to keep people safe, but sadly a small minority of people think the rules do not apply to them. We will do everything in our power to prosecute those people.”

As reported in the Crow, Network Rail is looking to replace the crossing at Foxton, which has been the scene of several accidents and near-misses in recent years, with a £14million bridge.
