Kayaking and canoeing courses help youngsters cool down
A GROUP of air cadets discovered a great way to keep cool in the hot weather - taking part in kayaking and canoeing.
The cadets from 2484 Bassingbourn squadron have been attending training days organised by Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing of the cadets, which allowed them to work towards their British Canoe Union one star awards by instructing them all the basics of kayaking and canoeing in a fun and safe environment.
They learned how to paddle and what to do if they capsized. The cadets then got the opportunity to test their skills on the Cardington white water course where they could apply their skills in fast moving water. The course is normally a dry channel running from the River Ouse into the Priory Marina, with some man made barricades and the opening of a sluice gate it turns into an action packed canoeing course.
Cadet Sergeant Dale Webb, from Royston, said: “It was a really fun weekend. Using the skills we have learnt on fast moving water was a real challenge.”
