TRANSPORT Secretary Alistair Darling will be opening the Baldock bypass on Thursday - six months ahead of schedule. The £43 million project was started in 2004 after years of discussion about the needs of a bypass. Currently, 22,000 vehicles-a-day pass through Baldock and it is estimated that the opening of the 6.3 km bypass will see a reduction in traffic movement of between 48 and 69 per cent. The bypass is expected to see 25,000 vehicles-a-day use the road by the year 2020. Permission to construct the bypass came in 2002 when the Department of Transport added the project to its major road work programme. After the opening a cavalcade of vehicles will drive along the bypass and then through Baldock town centre. It will be then that barriers will be removed and the bypass will be open for public use.
