Fire crews are trying to stop the spread of a blaze that has already consumed 1,000 tonnes of timber.

The fire started at 12.05pm today (Wednesday) at Stonebury Farm in Hare Street near Buntingford.

Six fire engines were called to the scene, including one from Royston, after there were reports that a large pile of timber had caught fire.

Upon arrival approximately a quarter of the pile had burnt out and crews were unable to stop the fire from consuming the rest of the wood.

Currently they are trying to prevent the blaze from spreading to other timber stacks and put out the initial fire.

Update 5.30pm: Three fire crews remain at the scene and “steady progress is being made” to contain the fire.
