Brothers who organised a Royston golf fundraiser for children’s neurology services at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge said they were “absolutely elated” to have raised more than £22,000.
Tom Hanson from Therfield and his brothers James and John from Royston – who are all third generation builders at family firm Hanson Services Ltd – organised the day at Royston Golf Club, and had hoped to top the £16,000 total they achieved with a similar fundraiser in Barkway last year.
Tom told the Crow: “I actually still can’t believe it. I thought that about £18,000 was the maximum we could reach, but we couldn’t have asked for a better group of gentleman to join us for the day and they kicked on to make it an incredible number!
“There was some really special support. Dean and Leigh Candler from North Herts Surfacing Ltd were out of this world with their generosity in the auction, and Banyers House, Prestige Flooring, Arc and Be, and Steve Jackson from Minster to name a few, were absolutely superb.
“The day went as smoothly as possible – we did have a downpour but everyone rolled up their sleeves, had another beer and got on with it!
“The course was impeccable, and the club’s hospitality was exceptional.
“With an incredible score of 51 – Tommy Crotty, Ricky Crotty, Steve Girling and Tom Wade picked up first prize.
“Tony Herd walked away with ‘longest drive’ and I got lucky with my shot on 16 to win ‘nearest the pin’.”
The hospital’s paediatric neurologist, Dr Alasdair Parker, provided the Hansons with a wish-list of equipment, and now Tom said it looks like they may be able to buy the lot.
Items include an interactive sensory floor mat, specialist wheelchair and upper limb functional assessment kit.
Tom added: “Staff from the ward came over on Friday to discuss the impact that this equipment would have and how it will help possibly thousands of children’s lives over the coming months and years and I think hearing it first hand from the ladies and gentlemen that work so hard to give our children the very best support and chance of well-being made it easier for the attendees to dig deep and do what they can to help.”
Banyers House’s manager Stevie Watts said: “It was a privilege to have sponsored a very successful and important charity golf day to help raise vital funds for the paediatric neurology team at Addenbroke’s Hospital.
“It’s always so good to see the local community pull together and the Hanson brothers did a great job organising the event again this year.
“The players certainly seemed to enjoy their day. We hope all our efforts will help the paediatric neurology team at Addenbroke’s continue to stay at the forefront of medical science, and provide families the very best of care.”
Tom has also reminded the community that it’s never too early to get involved for next year’s even.
He said: “We are looking to repeat the location and would like people to ask golfers to reserve the date of July 20, 2018, in their diaries.”
