THREE women from Royston donned brightly coloured bras and pounded the streets of London for a good cause.

They joined the Playtex Moonwalk to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

One of the Moonwalkers, Julia Griffin, said: "It was fantastic - it's a bit like a carnival.

"The atmosphere is wonderful. Everyone gets involved, you meet so many people, and the staff were fantastic.

"We've all been affected by cancer in some way, and this is a wonderful way of helping cancer research."

This year's event involved 15,000 walkers from 13-83, and organisers hope to match last year's fund-raising total of £6,944,280.

The walk began in Hyde Park at midnight, taking the women along the River Thames, across Tower Bridge, and past many of London's famous sites.

Angela Wakefield joined the nightime event.

She said: "Having the other two girls with me really helped. You keep each other going.

"The atmosphere was brilliant the whole way round."

Stella Clarke joined the group, who also took part in the walk two years ago, and completed the course in eight hours 45 minutes.

The three women all work at Royston's Tesco store, which has agreed to top up their sponsorship money by 20 per cent.

Another Royston woman decided to take part in the Moonwalk after a friend died of cancer.

Angie Adamson, who completed the course by herself, said: "The atmosphere is phenomenal.

"You meet and talk to people from all over the country.

"It's a real national event and I'll definitely be doing it again."

The charity started 10 years ago when 13 women power-walked The New York Marathon in their bras to raise money for breast cancer research.
