A BIKE riding robber snatched a woman's handbag as she walked through a Ware alleyway on Thursday.

The 40-year-old woman was taking the shortcut between Bowling Road and Clements Way at 5.39pm when a man on a black bike rode at her from behind.

As he went past he grabbed a handbag and a carrier bag the lady was holding.

He stopped for a brief moment after dropping the bags, then cycled off and turned right into Clements Street before going left onto Star Street.

The robber is described as white, aged 20-years-old or under, 5'4" tall and of a slim build. He wore a brown jacket.

Det Sgt Tim Johnson said: "I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or believes they saw the offender to come forward with information.

"I would also ask that people living in the area check their gardens in case any items have been disregarded."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Burglary and Robbery Unit on 01992 533271 or

call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

This robbery happened two weeks after a similar incident in the town. On September 27 an 88-year-old-woman was in the alleyway which connects London Road and Red House Close when her handbag was also snatched.
