FORGET the ceremony between the England footballer and the pretty pop star - because the real wedding of the year took place at Bassingbourn Primary School.

More than 360 pupils and staff gathered for headteacher and bride-to-be Jane Ward's pretend wedding in the school hall.

The day had been organised to celebrate Miss Ward's wedding and had been kept a secret for a number of weeks.

Miss Ward, 39, said: "I had been banished to my office all morning so I suspected that they were up to something. Then when I was given a wedding dress to put on, I thought it may have been a celebratory assembly. I would never have guessed what was actually in store."

Pupils acted out the roles of groom, father of the bride, best man, minister, and bridesmaids. There was even a professional wedding photographer and flower arranger.

"It was absolutely spectacular. I was led into the hall by Year 5 pupil, James Murdoch, who was the father of the bride, and we were greeted by hundreds of people.

"My eyes filled up and I was totally overwhelmed. It was one of the best moments of my life," said Miss Ward.

"Everyone was dressed up in posh hats and their best finery, including the children. I was completely speechless and I don't think there was a dry eye in the room."

Alex Richardson, five, played the role of the groom and mock vows were read and rings were exchanged as minister Joel Wheatman, of Year 6, pronounced Alex and Miss Ward "boy" and wife.

The school choir also sang Miss Ward's favourite hymns as everyone made their way to the playground for a reception. Five gazebos had been set up complete with two decorated thrones and wedding cake.

Miss Ward said: "I couldn't believe what was going on. Every detail had been planned, it was just like a real wedding. The reception after was brilliant.

"It was so emotional and the whole afternoon was just unbelievable and I was extremely touched."

Teacher Hazel Matthews, who helped organise the event, said: "It was a special day for a very special lady and we wanted to celebrate what will be a very memorable moment in her life.

"It was difficult keeping it from her, especially as there was so many people involved, but it was definitely worthwhile.

"We are now all looking forward to the real thing, although I must say this will be a hard act to follow."

Miss Ward said: "It was great practice for my big day, which I'm sure will be just as emotional. All the children and staff will be present so I've told the minister to expect a lot of people.

"I just can't wait, my partner and I are thoroughly looking forward to what will be a brilliant moment in our lives. And if the mock wedding is anything to go by, then it will be a truly fantastic day."

Miss Ward will marry Anthony Murray, 31, on August 4 at Bassingbourn Church.
