Students have swapped lessons for a day of fun in Bassingbourn – and raised more than £1,700 for two charities which have supported students and families at the school.
The Bassingbourn Village College students spent the morning planning and setting up their activities on the school playing fields before enjoying a traditional summer fete and fun run. Events included snail racing, hair braiding, bouncy slides, BBQ, dance displays as well as lots of cupcakes and sweets.
The event was held to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation in memory of former student, Adam Tolfree, who died suddenly of meningitis earlier this year, and the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation.
Funds went to the second charity after Year 11’s Oscar Davis received a liver transplant and his friends and teachers wanted to recognise his bravery by raising money for the charity that has supported Oscar and his family.
College achievement leader Dan Beck, who organised the event, said: “It was a brilliant afternoon – we are so proud of all the students who took part. We were all thinking of Adam and Oscar and to be able to raise so much money for their charities was a real bonus.”
The afternoon ended with a small private ceremony dedicating a tree in the school grounds in memory of Adam.
