A team of students put their chemistry skills to the test and came out on top in a competition at the University of Cambridge.

The team of Year 7 and 8 students from Bassingbourn Village College beat 19 other teams to take first prize at the competition, which was part of the Salters Chemistry Festival at the University of Cambridge, last month.

They had to complete two challenges: a forensic science puzzle involving chromatography and ion tests, and an exercise where they had to determine the amount of iron in a vitamin tablet.

Liz Philpott, chemistry teacher at the college said: β€œIt was a thrilling day. The students worked effectively as a team and overcame the challenges of using new techniques and machines only available in the university. They are to be congratulated on their cool nerve working under pressure in a Cambridge teaching laboratory.”
