Four village youngsters are appealing for support to save their youth club.

The Connections Youth Bus – a double decker that serves as a self-contained youth club – visits Bassingbourn each week but future funding is in doubt.

Regular users Saffron Dixon and Ellie Kendall from Bassingbourn, Joey Reader from Guilden Morden and Jacob Smith from Steeple Morden were upset to hear that funding for the bus wasn’t going to continue into the new term.

And the Bassingbourn Village College students approached Bassingbourn Parish Council to ask if it could help.

Parish council chairman Pete Robinson said: “Following an impassioned plea from the youngsters, who enjoy the bus greatly, the parish council will be funding it for a further period.

“Ellie, Saffron, Joey and Jacob put their case to us with great eloquence and convinced us to keep it going.”

But the council support only runs for a further four weeks, and future backing will depend heavily on an increase in the numbers of youngsters who attend each week.

The youngsters are working hard to spread the word among their friends to increase numbers as much as they can.

Saffron said: “The youth bus is open to anyone of secondary school age and is parked outside the primary school on Wednesdays between 7pm and 9pm.

“It is staffed by trained and experienced youth workers, and has the usual youth club facilities, activities and support available – well those that are possible on a bus anyway.

“We really don’t want to lose our youth club as there is really nothing else for us to do in the evenings.”
