Permission for eight new homes to be built Barley has been granted by North Herts District Council.

The development is to be built on a garden to the rear of a property in High Street and on adjoining paddock land.

The proposals also include the removal of an electrical substation, reconfiguration of the car park at the doctors’ surgery and the widening of an existing access road.

District councillor Gerald Morris – who had asked for the application to be considered by the committee – said: “I called this application in because I thought it was inappropriate – and it’s a pity that the committee thought differently.

“It’s right next to an area of conservation and some years ago this sort of development would never have been allowed.”

Councillor David Levett – NHDC’s executive member for planning and enterprise – said: “Councillors felt that the proposed improvements to the adjacent doctor’s surgery by means of additional parking and the provision of two affordable dwellings, outweighed any potential negatives.”
