Care home staff in Barley held a sponsored cycle on Saturday to raise more than £200 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The team at Margaret House Residential and Dementia Care Home in Barley set up the exercise bike in one of their lounges to support the society, which was the charity partner of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire.

Relatives and staff took it in turns to each cycle a kilometre or two over a period of just over six hours, and finished with a total of 122.5km (76 miles) – the same distance as that day’s women’s race.

Organiser Lea-Ann Smith said: “It was a great day, with residents really enjoying cheering on their relatives and the staff as they each did their bit. To raise this money is fantastic as the Alzheimer’s Society is a charity that we really like to support.

“This is just one of several events we will be holding over the coming weeks around Dementia Awareness Week.”
