RESIDENTS in Ashwell were given a festive treat, when the popular 'Ashwell at Christmas' returned to the village.

The event, which always attracts a number of visitors, gave residents the opportunity to support local craftspeople and buy their Christmas gifts within the village.

Carolyn Lush said: "Most of the village attended the event, with other visitors coming from even further afield. It is important to support the village and promote Ashwell goods and talent."

The event also raised £1,400 for the St Mary's Church Restoration Fund and in addition to a number of gift and craft stalls there was also a cake stands and candle stalls, a bran tub, tombola and refreshments.

A number of Ashwell's craftspeople also exhibited their work including photographer Alan Gilliam, modern jeweller Caroline Gee, sculptor Paul Bainbridge, designer Jill Birch and basket maker Sandra Barker.

Mrs Lush explained: "There was something for everyone, and there was a variety of beautiful and unusual gifts on offer. It was great that people came down and showed their support."

In addition to the stalls, the Charity Card Shop and the village museum was also open to the public.

Entertainment was supplied by the Ashwell Playgroup who hosted a Winter Wonderland at the URC Hall, whilst traditional Christmas carols were sung by the St Mary's church choir.

And the Ashwell theatre club carried the festivities into the evening with their adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, which was shown at the Village Hall.

Mrs Lush added: "It was a fantastic day and a real Christmas treat for everyone - we all had a lovely day.
