The work of a serving officer in The British Army created while she was on duty in Afghanistan is one of the highlights of an exhibition to be held in a Shepreth pub.

The exhibition at The Plough is part of a charity project launched by Cambridge artist Vandy Massey called Running With Brushes, which supports Care For Casualties, an appeal associated with The Rifles Regiment.

The regiment saw almost continuous action in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2007 and 2012 and so the charity provides badly needed support to the severely wounded, their families and the families of fallen riflemen.

The exhibition at The Plough will be held between Thursday, April 14 and Sunday, May 8, featuring the work of 10 accomplished Cambridge artists.

Their work covers a wide range of subject matter, style and media, and includes paintings and drawings by war artist Sophie Whittaker, pictured right, a serving army officer.

On two evenings during the exhibition – Thursday, April 14 and Thursday, April 21 – the main exhibition will be supplemented by 250 postcard-sized original paintings donated by more than 30 artists from all over the world.

Anyone who buys a £20 ticket, visitors will be able to choose and take away one of the small artworks while enjoying a glass of wine at The Plough’s gallery.

Vandy set up the project when her son joined the rifles, as she liked the way the charity supports veterans get back on their feet. The initial aim of the project was to sell 1,000 postcard-sized watercolours, and so far about 500 have been sold.

This is the first public exhibition the project has put on.

She said: “I am enormously grateful to all the artists, as the commission goes to the charity. It’s also exciting to make art accessible and affordable to everyone, to people who don’t usually buy art. It’s important that people do support art in its original form.”

Tickets are available here, direct from the pub or by emailing hello@theploughshepreth.co.uk.
