ARRESTS in Hertfordshire increased by more than six times the national average last year due to a countywide crackdown. Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed a 13 per cent rise in Herts, compared to a 2 per cent average increase for England and Wales. The number of arrests increased from 18,383 in 2003-4, to 20,775 last year - a rise of 2,392. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Beckley said: "These figures build on similar increases in the number of arrests by the Herts police in previous years. "It reflects the growth in both police numbers and experience in the county. "The increase in arrests also reflects use of police tactics to proactively target both criminals and areas where crime problems are occurring, and drive down crime in the country.
