Area’s most hygenic eateries revealed

CROW country’s most hygienic eateries have been revealed courtesy of North Herts District Council’s (NHDC) Scores on the Doors ratings system.

Establishments that serve food are given a rating from 0-5 for their hygiene and food management and then awarded certificates for the standards reached.

Almost 200 restaurants, shops, sandwich bars, schools and other places with kitchens were given the rating, with four and five star ratings being the most frequent.

Only two establishments across Crow country were given one star – The Wing On Chinese Takeaway in Melbourn Street, Royston, and Russell’s Meats of Station Road, Meldreth.

Since the launch of Scores on the Doors in 2009, the number of five star establishments in North Herts has tripled from 35 to 108, while less than 11 per cent scored two stars or less this year.

Cllr Bernard Lovewell of NHDC said: “It’s clear that standards in North Herts have improved since we launched Scores on the Doors thanks to an increased awareness of food hygiene amongst businesses and residents.

“The scheme has proved to be extremely popular as a clear and simple way of letting people find out more about where they buy their food from, and this latest development can only be a good thing if it enables more people to access that information.”
